We are pleased to announce the "First International Symposium on the Care of the Critically Ill Burn Patient" that will be held in Madrid (Spain) on 25-27 May, 2011.

Few areas in Medicine and Surgery are so challenging for physicians, surgeons, nurses and scientists as is the care of the burn patient. We clinicians and nurses face very often difficult to solve clinical problems and have to make decisions that directly impact the survival and hope for recovery of young critically ill patients as a result of burn injury.

On the other hand, the very young and the very old show fragile physiology and there the impact of clinical decisions is often even more important. In addition, recent advances in basic science are helping a great deal to understand important issues such as the pathophysiology of burn-induced organ dysfunction or the mechanisms of burn wound closure.

In this meeting we would like to offer the unique opportunity to overview recent advances in the management and in basic science pertinent to the critically ill burn patient. Over these two and a half days we will have the privilege to interact with colleagues from different continents, exchange experiences and learn from each other.
